BIOGRAPHY

PASSION IS RELENTLESS DETERMINATION TO ACHIEVE WHATEVER IS MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU...

Somenath Roy was born at Lucknow, on 4th February, 1960. He is a distinguished Bengali poet, a short story  writer and an essayist rolled into one. His father Anil Roy, a sitarist had the premature death when the poet was a mere child. His mother Ranu Roy brought her four children up in her paternal home at Nabadwip. His passion for playing sitar in his boyhood reined in his boyish emotion and restlessness. He inherited the musical instrument from his father. He passed Madhyamik examination from Nabadwip Hindu School and Draftsmanship from Krishnanagar. He went to Calcutta to find a mooring and there he got his Diploma in Architectural Engineering. Since 1985 he is an employee under P.W.(Roads) Department as Draughtsman. While he was having his training of Sitar under Pundit Asit Dutta, he started writing poems in ’80s. He is a man known for his magnanimity, honesty and simplicity and all these qualities have been reflected in his poems abundantly. Creative spontaneity is the hallmark of his poetry. His poetry is devoid of any trick, pretence and deliberate attempt at enigma and obscurity. He has never been a recluse poet. He has always responded and reacted to the eventful world around him. Everyday trifle has coalesced with the events of the wider world, such is the quality of his presentation. Even a prosaic slice of life, being imbued with his inherent imagination has become a beautiful piece of poetry where intellectuality has never been preponderant over its inner lyricism, the greatest casualty of modern poetry. He is every inch a humanitarian and so he is not oblivious of his duty towards society he lives in Prof. Tarun Sanyal, the renowned poet of the contemporary Bengali poetry has aptly said that the root of Somenath Roy’s poetry lies in the folk culture and life. His imagery, rhythm and mastery over diction have made his poetry almost like chamber music.
